THE SERIES OF INFORMATIONAL HAND-OUTS, IS NOT INTENDED TO TEACH YOU TAE KWON DO. THE INSTRUCTOR(S) WILL DO THAT FOR THE STUDENT WHO ATTENDS CLASS ON A REGULAR BASIS. THE PURPOSE OF THESE HAND-OUTS IS TO HELP REINFORCE WHAT YOU LEARN IN CLASS AND TO GIVE YOU SOMETHING CONCRETE TO TAKE HOME TO STUDY.

Study it carefully, learn what it contains, and incorporate what you learn into your training and daily life.

The relationship between the Student and Instructor is extremely important.

This handout has been prepared under the leadership of the BTA President and Founder, Mr. Gary W. Brewer Sr. Contributions to these handouts where made by BTA Instructors, and various respected Martial Artists. This information will make it easier for new students and returning students to familiarize themselves with current rules and regulations to ensure uniformity.

The strict policy guidelines will ensure the high standards of the BTA. Each student and Instructor determines our professional credibility and appearance; therefore, there should not be any deviation from these rules.

THE TAE KWON DO CLASS

WHAT TO EXPECT & HOW TO HANDLE IT

THE PHYSICAL & MENTAL ELEMENT

Tae Kwon Do training involves strenuous physical activity and is also emotionally demanding. The goal of training is to develop the mind and spirit as well as the body. Tae Kwon Do, as martial art, is a balance of physical skills with a humble, passive, and tranquil spirit. Your Instructor(s) and you yourself will put high demands upon your physical and emotional faculties, This is not done to be mean, but to;

1. Develop a better person.
2. Develop a genuine artist.
3. Develop a person capable of true self-defense.
4. Develop a person with the physical strength and metal alertness to react quickly and efficiently to unexpected challenges.
5. Develop a person with the self-confidence to walk away from conflict when appropriate.
6. Develop a person with the physical and mental skills to prevail when the situation demands it.

WHY YOUR INSTRUCTOR DOES WHAT HE/SHE DOES

If people are emotionally weak and lose emotional control when confronted by loud noises, someone yelling at them, or someone or something hurting their feelings, they would be incapable of self-defense. If they do not posses the physical strength and/or stamina to move quickly and efficiently, they would also be incapable of self-defense. Since one of the most important goals of Tae Kwon Do training is to develop self defense skill, your Instructor(s) will be working hard to develop those physical and mental skills in every class and every activity. Your Instructor(s) has many proven methods of developing these needed characteristics. He/she will utilize aerobic and anaerobic strength, stamina, and flexibility drills. He/she will insist on your answering up and being mentally alert throughout the class. He/she will lead you in specialized kicking/punching drills to develop devastating self-defense techniques. He/she will create and expose you to a sometimes-intense environment to stimulate a demanding situation to help develop your spirit, inner strength, and self-control. He/she will lead you in target drills, bag drills, static and dynamic stretching drills, and many other tried and true methods of instruction.

DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY

A student must not take what happens in class as a personal attack. A certain amount of emotional detachment is necessary both in class and in a real situation. This ability to separate the emotional self from the physical self is important if Tae Kwon Do is to be an effective self-defense and must be learned by every student of Tae Kwon Do. A new student of Tae Kwon Do must learn to expect the unexpected, to trust the Instructor(s) not to do them any real harm, and understand that the Instructor(s) do what they do in order to make you a better fighter and artist. If you do not take what happens in class as a personal attack, you will enjoy your training, and you will become a true martial artist.

THE TRUE SPIRIT OF TAE KWON DO

A true martial artist must have a positive, unrelenting spirit. As a student of Tae Kwon Do, you must develop an artistic understanding as well as physical skills and factual knowledge. An aggressive spirit must be tempered by inner calmness and humility. Developing the true spirit of a Tae Kwon Do artist will give you the confidence to remain calm but reactive in the face of intensity.

WHAT IS TAE KWON DO

Tae Kwon Do (foot-hand-art) is a beautiful expression of artistic movement. Through its practice students discover many qualities about themselves. Through this honest and pure art form, students identify their strengths and shortcomings and mature as responsible people. Tae Kwon Do is the most effective method of unarmed self-defense. A intricate art and exciting life sport, it is a superior method of maintaining physical and mental fitness.

THE BASICS

Though one might posses great physical strength and endurance, these components must be effectively used to produce a skillful martial artist. Since efficient movement is governed by the laws of physics that deal with balance, motion and force, it is important that the student have at least a basic understanding of these laws. Besides knowing how to execute the various blocks, kicks and punches, the student needs also to understand why they must be executed in specific ways. Basic martial arts skills can be divided into two main categories: stances and techniques. Stances simply refer to body positions. Each new stance involves a change in the center of gravity and in the placement on one’s feet. Techniques have to do with actions such as punches, kicks, and blocks.

STANCES

Since there is no single stance that is effective in all situations, several must be learned. Some stances are better for defense and some for offense actions. Certain stances allow one to move forward quickly, while others permit rapid movement to either the side or to the rear.

TECHNIQUES

Action techniques such as punches, strikes, kicks, and blocks are used for both offensive and defensive purposes. In certain instances, in response to being attacked, a good defense often results in the best offense or vise versa.
